How thinking global and acting local is enlarging the global footprint of the Staci Group

As an expert in operations and process improvement for 3PL providers, Johanna Pudda has transformed the way enterprises strategize and execute complicated logistic flows. From European luxury publisher Assouline and fashion icon John Varvatos to Amazon, Johanna has been a force multiplier for businesses in need of increased efficiency through operational excellence.

“I’m very passionate about linking the client experience and the end-to-end supply chain. In my early career I really started to link both of them and explore best practices,” she told BOSS. In her role at Assouline she was a client of global 3PL Staci Group (“the Group”). “I was actually on the other side of the equation for the first part of my career … and that was a great experience.”

That was nearly 15 years ago. In January 2022, she joined the Group as Managing Director and Chief Transformation Officer, where she shaped the company’s expansion in North America, which eventually rebranded as Staci Americas. Today, Johanna is the Staci Americas CEO for Sales, Marketing, Customer Success, and Solutions.

The France-based fulfillment and logistics services expert provides unique, fully integrated supply chain management solutions. Their multichannel logistics and distribution solutions include B2B, D2C, and e-commerce, operating over 80 warehouses across Asia, Benelux, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, the UK, and the U.S.

They manage a portfolio of illustrious clients in sectors including fast-moving consumer goods, retail, pharmaceutical, health, energy financial services, and many more. In August, the Group was acquired by bpostgroup, Belgium’s leading postal operator currently making its mark as a growing parcel and omni-commerce logistics partner in Europe, North America, and Asia.

The move expands the Group’s footprint and client base, with support functions centralized at the group level. Meanwhile, each country’s business units remain independent. The “Think Global, Act Local” strategy enables them to leverage the power of their global organization by executing at a local level. “Even though we’re a massive global corporation we can still provide a very localized approach to our clients and teams,” Johanna said.

The Staci Americas subsidiary offers multichannel logistics and distribution solutions for B2B, B2C, D2C, and e-commerce, operating 16 warehouses that serve the U.S. from coast to coast. A team of more than 500 experts in e-commerce and retail logistics, digital solutions, robotics, and AI serves the health and wellness, food and beverage, fashion and luxury, cosmetics and beauty, and CPG sectors. Their partnership with WWEX Group allows them to offer extensive freight solutions from any point in their national warehouse network.

“Our clients partner with us to ensure their customers have the best fulfillment experience. We receive products, pick, pack, and ship them to their end clients and meet all their quality expectations,” she said. “One of the bigger strengths of Staci Americas is our size. Our combined experience allows us to deliver customized experiences for our customers; we’re able to apply some very specific criteria to do that.”

The company identifies and applies the ideal technology and tools to improve and scale operations to give its clients proactive management. By using Rabot AI at packing stations on projects that require live QA QC during packing, workers have visual confirmation of the product and process. AI also allows supervisors to proactively coach the right composition of a package before it goes out.

Johanna’s experience at Amazon helped to grow her interest in BI and big data. “Power BI data … can provide the visibility needed to allocate a client’s resources in the best way for their operation, or for their finance, or HR. Creating visibility workflows is a very big advantage in this industry,” she said.

Staci Americas has also deployed Locus Robotics technology for robotic picking and RF at flagship locations around the country, as well as integrated drones for cycle counting and inventory management. “All of these technologies are being used to leverage data visibility and create an ecosystem where you can make the right decision from every layer of the operation quickly and easily.”

A proponent of cross-functional leadership, Johanna amplified the virtues of road mapping for her teams. After the acquisition by bpostgroup, Johanna and her teams created monitoring mechanisms for deployments and accountability. “A key variable to the success of the road map is buy-in from the team,” she stressed. “If the team believes in the strategy that the road map is trying to achieve and implement, the adoption is going to be much faster than if you have to sell it and the team is not convinced that it’s the right way to do it.”

In her view, leaders in the 3PL space must modernize their approach to strategic road maps and innovation. “The only way to get initiatives across the finish line is if everybody is pulling together to do it.”
