The path from founding a start-up to successfully selling it is full of challenges and successes. Some entrepreneurs have managed to turn their visions into successful businesses and then sell them profitably. In this article, we highlight the stories of Nicolas Genest, Max-Josef Meier, Apoorva Mehta, and Jessica Mah, who have made this remarkable journey.
Nicolas Genest: CodeBoxx
Nicolas Genest has had an impressive career as a technology expert and entrepreneur. He started his career as a business intelligence and platform engineer at Microsoft before holding senior positions at Pfizer. His experience in developing and managing IT projects eventually led him to vente-privee.com (now Veepee), where he was instrumental in the company’s growth as CTO. Under his leadership, the turnover of the flash sales pioneer grew from 170 million to 1.2 billion euros.
Genest later joined The RealReal, where he was the first CTO to completely transform the company’s technology platform, fueling its growth. Under his technological leadership, RealReal achieved significant revenue growth and prepared for a successful IPO in 2019. He found his next big challenge at ModCloth, where he orchestrated the rebirth of the brand and secured its sale to Walmart in 2017.
In 2018, Nicolas Genest founded CodeBoxx, a technology training company that trains people from different backgrounds to become professional coders in just four months. CodeBoxx has since successfully prepared hundreds of individuals for a career in technology. Genest remains an influential player in the technology industry, known for its ability to tackle complex technology challenges and lead organizations to success.
Max-Josef Meier: Stylight
Max-Josef Meier is an entrepreneur and investor who founded the fashion search engine Stylight in 2008 after studying economics at LMU and technology management at CDTM in Munich. Stylight enables users to search and compare fashion items from different online stores, which has significantly improved the shopping experience.
Under Max-Josef Meier’s leadership, Stylight expanded rapidly, reaching markets in 15 countries. This expansion was the result of a strategic focus on user-friendliness, extensive partnerships with leading fashion brands, and an effective marketing strategy. In 2016, Stylight was sold for around 80 million euros, underlying the success and importance of the platform in the e-commerce sector.
Between 2016 and 2019, Meier was an early-stage investor and invested in start-ups such as Personio and TeleClinic. In 2019, he founded FINN, a leading car subscription platform in Germany and the USA. FINN enables customers to take out a car subscription in just a few minutes that includes everything except refueling. FINN aims to make mobility more sustainable and customer-friendly. Today, the company employs 150 people and is the fastest-growing car subscription platform in Europe and the USA.
Apoorva Mehta: Instacart
Apoorva Mehta, born in India and raised in Canada, founded Instacart in 2012 after working at Amazon as a supply chain engineer. The idea for Instacart came from Mehta’s personal experience of having difficulty shopping for groceries, especially without his car. He recognized a gap in the market and developed an app that enables grocery deliveries.
Mehta initially missed the application deadline for the prestigious startup accelerator Y Combinator but was able to secure a place by delivering a six-pack of beer to Y Combinator’s partners via his app. This original idea helped him raise 2.3 million dollars in seed capital. Instacart grew quickly and now offers deliveries from over 80,000 stores in more than 14,000 cities across North America.
In July 2021, Mehta stepped down as CEO and became Chairman of the Board. He left the company for good in September 2023, shortly before Instacart went public. His stake in the company made him a billionaire. After Instacart, Mehta founded Cloud Health Systems, a medical consulting company that received 30 million dollars in seed funding.
Mehta’s journey shows that perseverance and innovation are crucial to succeed in the competitive e-commerce market. His ability to recognize and meet market needs has made Instacart a leader in the online grocery industry.
Jessica Mah: inDinero
Jessica Mah founded inDinero in 2009 when she was only 19 years old. Her company provides accounting and tax solutions for businesses and has grown into a multi-million dollar company since its inception. Mah began her entrepreneurial journey in middle school, where she ran a server-hosting business that generated significant revenue.
Mah attended the prestigious startup academy Y Combinator, which helped her scale her business and attract investors. Despite the early success, Mah struggled with the pressures and challenges of running a growing business. She experienced public praise, including being named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list, while also facing internal challenges, such as managing employee feedback and ensuring the company’s financial stability.
In addition to inDinero, Mah founded other companies including Astonishing Labs, a biotech company, and Mahway, a venture capital firm focused on supporting startups. With Mahway, she can focus on her passion for entrepreneurship while helping other CEOs realize their visions.
