A look at the business podcasts that could give you a competitive edge
As we discussed in our article on marketing tips for expansion, podcasting is a relatively low-cost way to communicate with a large number of followers while simultaneously building your brand and demonstrating your industry knowledge. While your own podcast might be somewhere down the pipeline, you can still get prepped and learn from those already earning an income and flexing their business prowess via the medium of podcasts. Of course, you probably know what a podcast is by now, but if you’re one of the few who don’t really get what the fuss is about, then check out the following programs for a quick lesson on what makes a great audio show.
Duct Tape Marketing
Hosted by John Jantsch, DTM is great for small business owners who simply want to know a little bit more about affordable marketing techniques. With hundreds of episodes already in the tank, the podcast is updated weekly and includes tips on everything from getting the best out of Google Ads to how a new business can compete with already established brands. The episodes range from 10 to 25 minutes, so you can cover a few topics on your commute or even while you are running errands. There are also occasionally interviews with some of the leading experts on marketing a small business.
Vanguard
Vanguard, presented by the fantastic Anshuman Iddamsetty, delves a little bit less into the tips and techniques side of things, but more on the human element of owning a small business. Most of the episodes feature honest and in-depth interviews with both entrepreneurs who found immediate success with an idea and those who struggled for years until they started making money. One of the newer podcasts on the scene, Vanguard is a refreshing look into the lives of entrepreneurs who don’t sugarcoat anything, and tell it like it is. One could definitely learn a few things here which aren’t found on any marketing website or book.
The $100 MBA Show
Omar Zenhom is the host of this incredibly detailed and popular podcast, where you’ll hear practical and varied tips on what it takes to grow and run a business. The $100 MBA Show succeeds mostly because of Zenhom’s positive and spirited personality, as well as his evident dedication and expertise on everything concerning entrepreneurs trying to make their mark in the business world. SMB owners can also submit questions that will be answered on the show, which gives it a great interactive feel.
Girlboss Radio
Host Sophia Amoruso makes it clear that being an entrepreneur isn’t at all a man’s world. Honest and insightful discussions with trailblazing women working in all types of industries feature on nearly every episode of Girlboss Radio. In addition to real-world advice and candid stories from the guests, you’ll also hear lighter, funnier chats that perfectly balance out the show.
The Pitch
In what could be perhaps the most distinctive podcast on this list, The Pitch is essentially an audio version of the hit TV program, Shark Tank. Entrepreneurs pitch to real investors and you hear all the interesting details which might typically stay behind closed doors during critical “make or break” business meetings. You might cringe when some entrepreneurs clearly aren’t prepared for the task, but along the way, you’ll get amazing guidance if it ever comes time for you to make your own pitch to an investor for a deal (but not necessarily recorded for everyone to hear!).
Business Wars
Finally, Business Wars is a show which is not exactly centered on advice or tips for running a company, but examines the often interesting competitiveness between major corporations. Entrepreneurs can, of course, learn a thing or two about how to handle a professional rivalry between another store or business person in your area. Host David D. Brown really breaks down what lessons everyone can learn from the on-going rivalries between big businesses like HBO and Netflix, Pepsi and Coke, and Nike and Adidas, for example.
Hey Boss team thanks for the shoutout to DTM Podcast. I really appreciate it.
