For Ranger Energy Services, the best kind of energy is transformational
Name an unconventional shale play, and chances are Houston’s Ranger Energy Services (NYSE:RNGR) is there. Not only are they one of the largest providers of high specification well servicing rigs and ancillary equipment in the oil and gas industry, they are redefining upstream oilfield services with a vibrant, tradition-breaking culture of positive energy.
The biggest operators in the sector choose Ranger for their superior performance and the value they bring to every project through their highly qualified teams, an award-winning safety environment, the most modern equipment and innovative technology, and long-term financial strength. Ranger has one of the highest free cashflow yields to reinvest in asset maintenance, one of the best debt-to-EBITDA ratios, and strong stock performance within their peer group.
Ranger is on a mission to transform the well service industry by implementing data capture and analytics across all of their brands and services. Each of those brands, including Ranger Energy Services, Mallard Completions, and Torrent Energy Services, brings unique services throughout America’s unconventional basins.
Ranger Energy Services offers Ranger Elite™ completion solutions, production maintenance, workover solutions, and well abandonment solutions using their high specification service rigs, rig-assist snubbing, equipment rentals, and well flowback services.
Horizontal wireline perforating and pump down solutions are specialties of the Mallard Completions brand. Mallard uses fit-for-purpose wireline perforating solutions and plug and play gun technology to lead the industry in ensuring safe and highly efficient operations.
Mallard’s expert engineers and crews implement cutting edge surface and downhole technologies that are maximized for safety by using greaseless cable, hydraulic latch assemblies, high visibility half-back wireline trucks, and integrated pump down services. A modular plug and play approach to gun technology – “guns” carry the explosive charges needed to perforate horizontal wells – allows Mallard to deliver 99% operating efficiency.
When the drilling and completion activity in a natural gas play moves faster than operators can build their permanent processing infrastructure, they turn to Torrent Energy Services and their slate of modular equipment and services to process natural gas at the wellhead.
Torrent owns and operates a fleet of mechanical refrigeration units, pressure reduction units, natural gas-powered generators, and natural gas liquid (NGL) storage tanks, and offers a full complement of turnkey services that helps operators meet pipeline specifications, extract higher value NGLs, provide fuel gas for well sites and facilities, and meet reduced VOC emission goals.
Driving new thinking
“We’re elevating the standards and technology used for well completions,” said Ranger’s VP of business development, marketing, and technology, Mark Haubert. “Our personnel go through high levels of training and competency assessment that we call Ranger Readiness Personnel certification. All of our equipment is maintained in top operating condition through our Ranger Live ePMM™ application to API specifications, and also is Ranger Readiness certified. We're meeting the stringent requirements of some of the most demanding operators – the multinationals and the major operators.”
Ranger applies state-of-the-art technology to meet those needs. Their Ranger Live™ mobile platform delivers a customized suite of applications to field crews at the job site, enabling them to access and input data stored on Ranger’s servers. Customers can access job data and post-performance metrics in real time from any location and with any device.
Ranger Live provides easy onsite access to the company’s health and safety platform, their electronic ticketing and activity reporting system, the operations control center for real-time job monitoring of their data acquisition system, their preventive maintenance system, and an app that monitors equipment driver behavior and ensures that Ranger’s DOT-regulated vehicles are compliant.
The digital package also provides real-time visualization from field sensors such as pressure, pump rates, wellbore depth, and bit torque values to get a clear, instantaneous view of site activities on demand. “We provide a complete solution,” Haubert said. “Often companies will choose three or four different providers to provide various equipment and services for an operation. We provide everything that’s needed for a complete process solution.”
“We drive new thinking” is a core value that’s evident in the company’s strategic transition from serving independent and midsize operators to partnering with multinationals and majors. “These operators typically have long-term strategies and development plans that make it much easier to recruit and deploy the best people,” Haubert said. “That also helps us to provide the best service. Working long-term makes it easier to identify improvement opportunities and to implement continuous improvement to provide the highest quality of service while protecting our employees and the environment in which we work.”
Ranger’s statement of purpose sums up why Tier One operators and industry pioneers choose them. “We exist to generate positive energy,” Haubert said. “We integrate our purpose and our core values into everything we do, and that’s a real differentiator. Internally, we work together with positive energy. We want to help our customers generate positive energy in terms of their products, and we certainly want to have positive energy and strong positive relationships with our customers, our employees, and our business partners. We want everyone to have the opportunity to thrive and we want to elevate the way energy is resourced.”
That’s pretty unconventional in and of itself, and it’s sure to keep Ranger forging ahead for a very bright and upbeat future.
