Making equipment that is more productive, safer, and better lasting may be their passion, but the Bedford, Pa.,-based company is just as enthusiastic about helping construction equipment dealers build great businesses, reflecting their desire to help their customers do more as well.

Additionally, they provide many industry-exclusive services such as expedited (Rapid) lead times, inventory management programs, and dealer training. They offer free color matching, custom logos, and ID tags, plus have a robust inventory of in-stock attachments, and much more. Being first and largest is built into Rockland’s DNA; after all, they designed and built the world’s first wheel loader rock bucket and the world’s largest dozer blade.

The company holds over 45 patents, and several of their creations have become industry standard, including horizontal wear strips on excavator buckets, using high-strength USA steel in place of cast lips, and hydraulic thumbs. Their portfolio of over 250 products covers the behemoths they’ve built their reputation on as well as a vast selection of related equipment.

What many don’t yet know is that Rockland is broadening their influence in the sector by proving that they’re more than a just a manufacturer or supplier. It’s not much of a flex for them as a customer-centric family-owned business with a great book of repeat business; it’s a matter of showcasing the strengths they’ve always had to a wider audience.

“Above and beyond everything else, one of our primary goals is to be easy to do business with,” Scott Smith, Rockland’s Marketing and Product Manager, said. “We’re not here just to sell attachments. We’re here to make the dealer’s life easy, whether that’s making our order process easier, invoicing faster, or having the most knowledgeable service and support to answer your questions. We’re ultra-responsive, easy to deal with, and very fair.” And to best support their customers, their overall response times, already best in class, continue to improve dramatically.

One of the most difficult aspects of the attachment industry is the ability to meet delivery deadlines. “We give our customers reliable lead times, a promise those customers can take that to the bank,” he continued. “That’s a real value add for them. This industry is not known for on-time shipping, and we’re really good at it.”

Rockland’s VP of customer success, Matthew Pixler, added, “Our competitive advantage is that we’re really good at scheduling, getting jobs done and out the door on time, and to the customer on time.

When we say we’ll get them delivered, we do, and many manufacturers struggle with that.”

They’re currently concentrating on expanding their capacity and instituting more efficient manufacturing processes so they can offer core products with the most competitive price and lead time possible.

For years, Rockland has been known in the industry as the company that excels at making giant pieces of equipment and what Smith cheekily refers to as the “custom weird stuff.” “We still do all of that very well, but people may not know we are also really good and really competitive at providing the products they use every single day.”

Take excavator thumbs, for instance. “There are six or seven different types in the market, and we offer all of them,” Smith said. They’re also extremely competitive on common excavator products like digging buckets, excavator rippers, and ditch cleaning buckets. On the loader side, they offer key products such as loader couplers, general purpose buckets, light material buckets, and construction forks.

“We have always been known for our customization. We have the largest custom job shop for attachments in the country and we do it very, very well,” stressed Pixler. “Our ability to make anything that’s needed for the construction attachment industry is pretty cool.”

Rockland also stands apart by having a superior workforce, and an ethos often missing in their sector. “It’s a very big deal for us to treat our Rocklanders well,” Smith said, noting that many manufacturers offer little more than long hours and rough conditions. “We’re always looking at wages and benefits, and for our area we have a very competitive package. We take care of our people, making sure they have everything they need, including intangibles outside of work.”
