Spring has formally sprung, and we have all already fallen victim to the pernicious trap that is the sunny-but-still-cold weather. Dressing a layer too light besides, the spring months are a real gift, and especially so after the torrid weather we’ve endured this last winter.
As we breathe that breath of fresh floral air, we also set to thinking about the other parts of our life we’d like to freshen up, our homes very much included. Spring cleaning has been an almost-involuntarily tradition for generations, and spring renovations are a single active step ahead of them; why, though, is spring the right time to be thinking about making changes to our homes?
#1 – The Weather
First and foremost, there is the weather. As we start to emerge from the figurative pits of cold temperatures and intolerable storm conditions, once-impossible renovation tasks become much simpler to undertake. Basic quality-of-life maintenance tasks like gutter clearing and house repainting extend the lifespan of your home and its fixtures, and give a refreshed glow to it in the longer, sunnier days.
Spring catches this light and sun before temperatures raise too high, allowing you to complete high-intensity tasks without the corresponding risks of heat exhaustion or fatigue. The sunnier weather also has a remarkable impact on our mental health, which can in turn – and perhaps surprisingly to some – make renovation work a more palatable and achievable goal than in other months. Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is an easy condition to manage, but can also make the spring a more enjoyable time in which to undertake difficult work.
#2 – Cheaper Supplies
There are other pragmatic reasons for which spring turns out to be ideal renovating time, too. This is particularly true when it comes to the financial part of the equation, as supplies can be cheaper to procure than in the summer when most heavy-duty construction projects start. If you’re relying on secured loans to afford major renovations, you can rest assured that the money you’re borrowing will go that little bit further – with long-term financial rewards, as well as those short-term extra pence to spend on modern conveniences.
#3 – Easier to Book Tradespeople
Finally, but perhaps most crucially of all, the springtime is better for starting to renovate your home as your access to tradespeople is much less obstructed than otherwise. In the winter months, contractors may be wrapped up in long-term internal projects, or otherwise too expensive to book out.
In the summer, contractors are in especially high demand, which can make booking in more involved works extremely difficult. The spring months are a sweet spot, where you can get skilled workers in to do various jobs without competing against a flurry of other homeowners in the process. As such, spring is a truly ideal time in which to consider getting your house just as fresh as the air feels!
