Caring for a loved one at home is one of the most meaningful things you can do, but it can also be one of the most demanding. Across the country, family caregivers quietly take on the role of nurse, companion, cook, and emotional support system for aging or disabled relatives. At FreedomCare, we believe these caregivers deserve to be recognized, supported, and paid for their work. And now, we’re proud to expand our services to help families in Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio.
If you live in one of these states and are currently caring for a loved one, or you know someone who is, here’s what FreedomCare’s expansion means for you, and how we can help.
What Is FreedomCare?
FreedomCare is the nation’s leading provider of Medicaid-funded home care that allows individuals to receive care from someone they already trust, like a family member or friend.
Unlike traditional home care agencies that send unfamiliar caregivers into the home, FreedomCare helps Medicaid recipients choose someone they know and love to be their paid caregiver. This care model not only provides comfort and consistency for the patient but also helps caregivers earn income for the work they’re already doing.
With over 72,000 families supported nationwide, FreedomCare handles all the hard parts, from eligibility checks and caregiver training to paperwork and ongoing support, so families can focus on what really matters: staying together.

Now Available in Michigan: Support Through the Home Help Program
As of June 2025, FreedomCare proudly launched its support for Michigan’s Home Help Program, a Medicaid initiative designed to provide personal care services to residents in their own homes.
Under this program, eligible Michigan Medicaid members can now choose a caregiver, often a family member or trusted friend, to assist with essential daily living activities such as:
- Bathing and dressing
- Cooking and meal prep
- Mobility and transfers
- Personal hygiene and more
Whether you’re in Detroit, Grand Rapids, Flint, or rural Michigan, FreedomCare’s model ensures that you’re not only supported but empowered. We take care of the paperwork, provide training, and guarantee fast pay for caregivers.
“This program is about dignity and independence,” says Caitlin Griffin, FreedomCare’s Michigan Operation Director. “Our goal is to keep families together, with compassionate care delivered by someone the patient already knows and loves.”
Illinois Families Can Now Choose Their Own Caregivers Through the Home Services Program
In Illinois, FreedomCare is now an approved provider under the state’s Home Services Program (HSP). Through this program, Medicaid recipients who need help with daily activities no longer have to rely on agency-hired aides—they can hire someone they trust instead.
The HSP covers assistance with tasks like:
- Bathing and grooming
- Cooking and housekeeping
- Dressing and toileting
- Mobility support
From downtown Chicago to Cook County and beyond, FreedomCare is helping caregivers get trained, supported, and paid weekly for the care they give.
Caitlin Griffin, who also oversees FreedomCare operations in Illinois, says: “We know that caregiving is a full-time job for many. We’re here to make that work easier, more supported, and financially recognized.”
Whether you’re a spouse, sibling, child, or close friend already helping out, you may be eligible to become a paid caregiver under this Medicaid program.
Ohio Launch Brings Personal Care and Structured Family Caregiving to More Families
Families across Cleveland, Columbus, and other Ohio communities can now access FreedomCare’s Personal Care Services and Structured Family Caregiving programs.
These programs are part of Ohio’s Medicaid Home Care Services and enable recipients to select a caregiver they trust, often a family member, to help with:
- Dressing and grooming
- Bathing and hygiene
- Meal preparation
- Walking and moving around safely
FreedomCare’s Ohio expansion focuses on speed, simplicity, and support. That means caregivers get trained quickly, patients receive care from familiar faces, and everyone involved gets help navigating Medicaid requirements.
“Ohioans deserve in-home care that’s as compassionate as it is dependable,” says Griffin. “We’re honored to serve this state and help keep care within the family.”

Who Can Qualify to Be a Paid Family Caregiver?
Eligibility requirements vary slightly by state, but in general, you may qualify if:
- The person receiving care is enrolled in Medicaid
- They need help with activities of daily living (ADLs)
- A doctor or care coordinator approves home-based care
- You are not legally restricted (in some states, spouses or legal guardians may be ineligible)
In most cases, family caregivers must also complete training and meet program requirements, which FreedomCare helps you handle from start to finish.
