A Career Built on Adaptability
Toronto’s real estate scene has never been for the faint of heart. It’s fast, competitive, and constantly changing. For Michelle Kam, that challenge was part of the appeal. From her early start selling million-dollar homes to running her own brokerage and leading within one of the city’s top firms, her career is defined by adaptability, focus, and a deep understanding of people.
“I loved real estate from the start because it rewarded effort,” she says. “If you worked hard and treated people right, it showed in your results.”
After graduating with honours from York University, Michelle joined Re/Max and immediately jumped into the luxury resale market. It was an intense introduction. Clients buying or selling high-end properties expected precision and poise. “My first year was like a masterclass in detail,” she recalls. “I once spent hours checking the lighting in a house because the client wanted to see how their art would look. That’s when I learned that every small thing matters.”
Moving with the Market
By the late 2000s, Toronto’s skyline was transforming. Condos, lofts, and townhomes were becoming the new face of the city. Michelle saw it before most. “People were trading big backyards for walkability and convenience,” she says. “I realised the city was changing, and I wanted to grow with it.”
She began focusing on the urban market, helping clients buy and sell condos across downtown Toronto. It wasn’t just a career pivot—it was an education in how people’s lifestyles shape what they value in a home. One client, she recalls, cared less about the kitchen size and more about the building’s dog-friendly policy. “That’s when it clicked,” she says with a smile. “Real estate isn’t just about square footage—it’s about how people live.”
Learning the Pre-Construction Game
Michelle’s curiosity led her into pre-construction sales, where she worked with respected developers like Concord Alex and Baker Real Estate. It was a different world entirely. Selling something that doesn’t exist yet requires both confidence and creativity.
“I learned how to help people picture their future,” she explains. “If you can’t walk them through a floor plan and make it feel real, you’ll lose them.” She remembers describing how sunlight would hit a client’s balcony every morning—a simple image that sealed the deal.
Pre-sale projects also taught her endurance. “It’s not about one quick sale,” she says. “You’re managing dozens of units, timelines, and expectations. It’s a long game, and you have to stay steady.”
Building a Brokerage from the Ground Up
After several successful years, Michelle was encouraged to open her own firm. She launched City Accord Realty Inc. and ran it for more than a decade. Running a brokerage tested a new set of skills—leadership, organisation, and mentorship.
“I wanted to create a place where agents could grow,” she says. “Some came in nervous about contracts or negotiations. Watching them gain confidence was one of the best parts of my career.”
Her leadership style focused on structure and support. She built systems that helped new agents learn quickly while giving experienced ones room to thrive. The result was a team that earned respect through professionalism and results.
Joining Forces with Re/Max Condos Plus
In 2016, a conversation changed her course again. She met Jamie Johnston, owner of Re/Max Condos Plus, and decided to join the brand. “It felt like coming home,” she says. “Re/Max gave me the tools to scale up and focus on what I do best—helping clients and leading teams.”
By that time, Toronto’s condo market was booming. Prices were rising fast, and buyers were competing for limited inventory. Michelle’s experience in both resale and pre-construction gave her an advantage. She could guide clients through the complexity with clarity and calm.
“I’ve learned not to chase the market,” she says. “You stay consistent, stay informed, and keep your clients grounded.”
The Value of Persistence
Persistence is a recurring theme in Michelle’s story. Whether navigating luxury homes, adapting to condo trends, or running a business, she’s shown that growth comes from staying steady through change.
“Real estate teaches patience,” she says. “Sometimes deals take months. Sometimes they fall apart. The key is not to take it personally—just keep going.”
Her approach has earned her a loyal base of clients who trust her guidance. Many have followed her across multiple properties and even generations. “There’s nothing better than helping a client’s kids buy their first home,” she adds. “That’s when you know you’ve built real relationships.”
Lessons for New Agents
Michelle believes success in real estate isn’t about flashy marketing—it’s about reliability and trust. Her advice for newcomers is direct and practical:
- Learn the Market – “Know your numbers—price per square foot, neighbourhood trends, and what’s in development.”
- Be Honest – “Clients can tell when you’re guessing. If you don’t know, find out.”
- Stay Flexible – “Markets shift fast. Be willing to change direction when needed.”
- Invest in People – “Your network will outlast any listing.”
A Lasting Impression
Today, Michelle Kam stands out not just for her longevity but for her adaptability. Her journey from luxury homes to pre-construction sales and leadership shows how resilience shapes a career.
“I’ve seen every kind of market—booms, dips, bidding wars, and quiet seasons,” she says. “The one constant is that people will always need guidance. If you can offer that with honesty and care, you’ll always have a place in this business.”
From young professional buyers to long-term investors, her clients trust her experience. And as Toronto’s skyline continues to evolve, so does she—proof that leadership in real estate isn’t about standing still but growing with the city itself.
