Jefferson Dafydd is a Senior Advisor, Growth Sports at Team Advisory Group (TAG) and a sports business executive known for building the commercial systems that turn potential into performance. With three decades of experience across America’s most popular leagues, Olympic disciplines, and national governing body ecosystems, he has operated at the highest levels of the industry while also guiding emerging leagues, grassroots platforms, and challenger sports properties as they evolve into sustainable, investable businesses. His career blends strategy with execution, having helped generate more than $1 billion in revenue through sponsorship, media rights, and ticketing, while supporting organizations through ownership transitions, venue development, and large-scale growth initiatives.
At TAG, Dafydd focuses on Growth Sports, a category that includes emerging sports platforms, global tours entering new markets, and innovative challenger leagues with the potential to become long-term sports assets. He works directly with these properties to design and implement scalable commercial infrastructure across sponsorship, media, ticketing, and fan development. His approach is rooted in a core belief that revenue alone does not create sustainability; systems that scale do. By applying major-league operating standards to growth-stage organizations, he helps clients move from fragmented momentum to structured, repeatable success.
Team Advisory Group is a modern sports business collective that connects sports properties with a curated network of experienced operators across key disciplines, including sponsorship, ticketing, branding, broadcast, and live event operations. TAG assembles customized teams for each engagement, allowing clients to access senior-level expertise without the overhead of a fixed organization. The firm specializes in helping Growth Sports strengthen their commercial foundation and build scalable models that can transform small-scale beginnings into headline events.
Tell us a little about what you do and what makes your brand or company unique?
At Team Advisory Group (TAG), I serve as Senior Advisor, Growth Sports, where I focus on helping emerging and challenger sports properties become sustainable, scalable businesses. My work centers on building the commercial infrastructure required to grow across sponsorship, media, ticketing, and fan development. Many properties generate early attention or revenue, but few develop the systems needed to support long-term success. I specialize in turning that early momentum into structured, repeatable performance that can scale.
What makes TAG unique is our model. We are not a traditional agency. We are a collective of experienced sports business operators who have worked at the highest levels of the sports and entertainment industry. For each engagement, we assemble a tailored team of senior experts to address specific client needs, giving properties access to proven leadership without unnecessary overhead. This allows for sharper strategy, faster execution, and more practical solutions grounded in real-world experience.
Our differentiation is also rooted in philosophy. We believe long-term success in sports is not driven by trendy publicity or format innovation alone, but by the strength of the systems that support growth. By applying major-league standards to emerging properties, we help clients build the foundation required to evolve from promising concepts into investable, headline-generating sports businesses.
How/why did you get into the sports business niche?
My entry into the sports business began as a startup rooted in both passion and opportunity. As a collegiate volleyball player, I leveraged my network and entrepreneurial mindset to organize outdoor volleyball tournaments across the United States, bringing together a fragmented group of independent event operators into a more unified system. What started as a grassroots effort quickly scaled into the largest outdoor volleyball association in North America before being acquired by the domestic professional beach volleyball tour. That experience marked my transition from athlete to operator and established my foundation as a builder in the sports industry.
That early success shaped how I view sports as a business. I recognized that sustainable growth is not just about competition, but about the systems that support it, including organized participation, structured pathways, and scalable commercial models. That perspective carried into my roles across MLS and NBA, where I expanded my expertise across sponsorship, media, ticketing, and operations while continuing to focus on building infrastructure that drives revenue and long-term value.
What began as organizing tournaments evolved into a career focused on building and scaling sports properties. Today, I apply those same principles to help emerging and challenger sports transform early momentum into structured, sustainable businesses.
What do you enjoy most about what you do?
What I enjoy most is the act of building. I am drawn to taking something with potential and helping shape it into a real, functioning, and scalable business. I am especially energized by working with emerging and challenger sports properties, where the path is not fully defined, and the opportunity to create meaningful impact is highest. Whether I am designing a revenue model, structuring a sponsorship strategy, or refining a go-to-market approach, I value turning ideas into systems that deliver results.
I also enjoy the moment when a property begins to click. When the infrastructure is in place, the strategy is aligned, and momentum becomes repeatable, that is where real value is created. That transition from fragmented growth to structured success is often the difference between a property that stalls and one that becomes investable and scalable.
Beyond the business side, I find fulfillment in the broader impact. Building new leagues, formats, and pathways creates opportunities for athletes, engages new fans, and expands the sports landscape. Being part of that evolution is what I find most rewarding.
As a leader, what sets you apart from others in your field, particularly in a crowded market?
What sets me apart is my ability to bridge two worlds that are often disconnected. I have operated inside major leagues at the highest level while also building and scaling emerging sports properties from the ground up. That dual perspective allows me to apply major-league discipline, structure, and revenue strategy to growth-stage organizations that typically lack that infrastructure. In a crowded market, that combination creates a distinct advantage.
I also focus on building systems, not just generating strategy. Many leaders can identify opportunities or drive short-term revenue, but fewer can design and execute the commercial architecture that allows a property to scale consistently over time. My approach centers on creating repeatable models across sponsorship, media, ticketing, and fan development, ensuring growth is not dependent on one-off wins but on a sustainable foundation.
Finally, my leadership is grounded in execution. I have been responsible for delivering results in both high-pressure league environments and entrepreneurial settings. That experience allows me to move from strategy to action quickly and gives me credibility with stakeholders. In a market full of opinions, my edge comes from having built, scaled, and delivered across every level of the sports business.
Who are the primary clients/organizations you’ve served, and how has that focus evolved?
Throughout my career, I have worked across a wide spectrum of sports organizations, from major professional leagues to emerging and grassroots properties. My experience includes roles and advisory work connected to the NBA, WNBA, and MLS, as well as Olympic and national governing body ecosystems. In those environments, I focused on driving revenue through sponsorship, media rights, ticketing, and premium experiences, while supporting broader initiatives like brand positioning and venue development.
Over time, my focus evolved from established leagues to building the next generation of sports properties. I became increasingly drawn to Growth Sports, properties with high risk and high reward, where I could apply major-league principles to earlier-stage ventures. This includes grassroots ecosystems, international sports entering the U.S., and fast-growing niche formats that need structure and commercial infrastructure.
Today at TAG, I focus on emerging leagues, global tours, and challenger properties that have strong concepts but need systems and discipline to become sustainable and investable. I believe the most compelling opportunities in sports are being created in this middle layer, where the right infrastructure can create significant long-term value.
What are the most in-demand services in your niche?
In the Growth Sports space, I consistently see demand for services that help organizations move from early traction to scalable business models. Most properties are not lacking in ideas or fan interest. They are lacking the commercial infrastructure to convert that momentum into sustainable revenue. The biggest needs center around building revenue architecture across sponsorship, media, ticketing, and premium experiences, along with systems for consistent execution.
At TAG, we often begin with Commercial Readiness Diagnostics to identify gaps and unlock growth. These include a Commercial Infrastructure Audit, Revenue Framework and Sponsorship Architecture review, Ticketing Inventory and Pricing Audit, Go-to-Market and Brand Positioning assessment, and U.S. Expansion strategy when needed. These diagnostics provide a clear roadmap for what must be built to scale.
There is also strong demand for operators who can execute. Clients are looking for partners who can implement systems, manage pipelines, and drive results. The shift is clear. Organizations are no longer looking for ideas alone. They are looking for infrastructure and leadership that can turn those ideas into sustainable, investable businesses.
How do you stay ahead of industry shifts?
I stay ahead of industry shifts by focusing less on static data and more on underlying patterns. Most data reflects what has already happened. I focus on directional trends, including where capital is flowing, how fan behavior is evolving, and which business models are gaining traction. That allows me to anticipate where the industry is heading rather than react to it.
I also stay close to operators building in real time. Through my work at TAG, I am constantly engaged with founders, executives, and investors who are testing new formats and revenue models. Those conversations provide a forward-looking perspective that is often more valuable than historical data.
That thinking is also shaping my upcoming book, Rise of the Sports Middle Class, which explores a new layer of investable sports properties between grassroots and major leagues. It serves as a framework to separate hype from long-term opportunity. By grounding my perspective in the idea that infrastructure determines success, I can focus on the trends that will define the next generation of sports businesses.
What are the major challenges you face, and how do you navigate them?
One of the biggest challenges is the gap between perception and reality, especially in emerging properties. Many organizations generate early excitement, but that momentum can create a false sense of sustainability. Without structured systems, that success is difficult to maintain, which leads to stalled growth and inconsistent revenue.
Another challenge is fragmentation. The sports landscape is highly decentralized, which makes it difficult to build partnerships, develop talent pipelines, and align stakeholders. This lack of alignment often slows growth and creates inefficiencies.
I navigate these challenges by focusing on structure, alignment, and execution. At TAG, we prioritize building commercial infrastructure early, including clear revenue frameworks and go-to-market strategies. We also focus heavily on stakeholder alignment, ensuring everyone is working toward the same long-term goals. By bringing discipline and clarity to complex environments, we help organizations move from volatility to sustainable, investable growth.
