Having your very own garage workshop is a great way to facilitate engagement with a hobby or passion. Hobbies are scientifically attached to happiness and well-being, so it’s a real privilege if you have a dedicated space for them. However, even if you’ve set up a little corner where you can knit, practice pottery or paint, there might well come a time when you outgrow your initial garage workspace.

If you’re working with an active garage and workshop in one space, it can be hard to know where to start. This article will offer some advice on how to enhance your working area, so you can maximise your enjoyment of your pastimes, without infringing on your day-to-day life.

Planning & layout

Unless you’re a multimillionaire, garage space is going to be limited. If you’re looking to enhance your workshop, planning for a smart layout will be essential.

  • Create zones, especially if you’re still storing cars in the garage. Spots like “tool zone”, “bench zone” and “storage zone”, which are clearly defined, will make it easier to move through the space.
  • In the same vein, arrange any tools or equipment to create a smooth workflow. Set your garage workshop bench up in a place near tools that allows for mobility.
  • Mobile bases on larger setups, like wheeled seats, can allow for more flexibility and movement.

On a more significant level, new installations like space-saving up-and-over garage doors can help to improve layout potential.

Proper storage & organisation

Space-efficient storage is essential if you’re trying to create the perfect layout for your work area. Tools, equipment and working surfaces can take up a lot of room, which is why it’s important to lean into smart organisation solutions.

  • Use walls and ceilings, with pegboards, overhead racks, slats and magnetic strips to save floor space.
  • Invest in modular garage storage systems, which come in the form of cabinets, drawers, wall-mounted tracks and more.
  • Labelling drawers, shelves and containers will save you time and energy when it comes to finding what you need at the moment.

Setting up your storage properly will enhance the efficiency and general productivity of your garage workspace.

Improving climate control & ventilation

If you’ve not gone the whole hog for your garage workshop, you’ve probably been working without proper climate control or ventilation. When you commit to a more closely dedicated space for practicing your passion, it’s wise for comfort and safety to improve these aspects.

  • Proper ventilation is essential for removing dangerous sawdust, fumes from paints and glues or other airborne particles. Fans or new window/door installations can be good additions.
  • Portable HVAC systems, like space heaters or mini-split systems help to maintain comfortable temperatures, which can be useful for more labour intensive hobbies.
  • A dehumidifier can help to prevent the rust on your tools, along with offering extra material protection qualities.

It’s important to create a space that you feel comfortable and safe working in, especially as you spend more time in the space.

Getting appropriate lighting

Different hobbies and tasks have different lighting requirements. An enhanced garage workshop will come as the result of getting appropriate lighting, while there are some other general principles to follow.

  • LED fixtures are more energy efficient, with a longer lifespan, offering a crisper and shadow-free illumination for any task or hobby.
  • Layer your lighting, with focused task lighting over workbenches and equipment to allow for maximum focus when necessary.
  • Consider your colour temperature – something between 4000K and 5000K is going to be most suitable for more detailed work.

You can’t be expected to do your best work without proper visibility, so make sure your lighting is up to scratch.

With these guidelines you should be able to take your existing garage workshop and turn it into something more conducive to the outcomes you can be most proud of. Don’t rush it and take things one step at a time – as your hobby has taught you, masterpieces take time!
