In business leadership, strategic investments in talent development can yield significant returns. This principle extends beyond the boardroom, as demonstrated by entrepreneur and former professional cyclist Igor Makarov’s recent support of the 2024 INEX Club Charity Ride in Cyprus. This event showcased the country’s cycling talent and highlighted the role of philanthropy in building a new generation of athletes.
A Celebration of Cycling Talent
The INEX Club successfully hosted its 2024 Charity Ride last May 18, dedicated to supporting the Cyprus National Cycling Team. This event brought together 80 talented cyclists who completed 150 km and 300 km races under the bright, sunny skies of Limassol, Cyprus.
The race started at the INEX Club in Germasogeia, passed scenic locations like Agros, Larnaca, Protaras, and Ayia Napa, and concluded at the INEX Cycling Coffee Garage. The cyclists demonstrated their endurance and skill, traversing the demanding terrain and enjoying the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts.
The participants’ sweat and hard work paid off as the charity ride, with the generosity of the sponsors, successfully raised enough funds to purchase bicycles and other equipment for the young talents in the Cyprus Cycling Federation. This support was crucial in helping these athletes realize their abilities and reach their full potential.
Makarov mentions, “Many thanks to the organizers and the President of Cyprus Cycling Federation for the continuous support in developing cycling in Cyprus. This is something I am personally committed to doing as a former professional cyclist and a member of the UCI Management Committee.”
An Investment in the Future of the Cyprus Cycling Community
Makarov’s sponsorship of the charity ride goes beyond mere financial support. As a former professional cyclist with decades of experience in sports and business, he brings a unique perspective to talent development and envisions a bright future for the Cyprus cycling community.
The former athlete believes that the support provided by generous sponsors and the commitment of organizations like INEX Club demonstrates that with sustained backing and strategic investments, young athletes can dream big, realize their aspirations, and become role models for the next generation of cyclists.
As a Cyprus citizen who has lived in the country for over 30 years, Makarov’s attendance and sponsorship for the 2024 INEX Charity Ride mark the beginning of what he sees as strategic partnerships to advance cycling in Cyprus. He is committed to fostering local talent and enhancing the tools needed for the sport to thrive.
This commitment is evident as the INEX Charity Ride is not the first time Makarov supported the cycling development. For over a few decades, his businesses also donated funds to cycling organizations such as Union Européenne de Cyclisme (UEC) and other local charity rides such as “Tour de Broward,” “The Hublot Best Buddies Challenge: Miami,” and many others.
Makarov also founded and was the main sponsor of the Swiss-registered professional multinational cycling team Katusha Team, which competed as a UCI ProTeam / WorldTour team from 2009 to 2019.
From the 2024 INEX Club Charity Ride, Igor Makarov looks forward to more opportunities to share his resources and knowledge and continuously advance cycling from Cyprus to the world.
