It’s 2024, but one thing hasn’t changed and maybe never will: blogging. Are you ready to take the leap? Here’s how to start an appealing blog that you can monetize with a bit of luck and a lot of effort.
Choose a niche and a name
Your blog’s name is the first thing visitors will read. It’s usually the blogger’s name, a combination of words, or the name of their company, if applicable. The niche is the general subject area of the content. It can involve technology, food, fashion, traveling, etc. Ideally, you would include one or two words indicating the content subject in the blog’s name. This will be helpful for your future readers.
Sign up for web hosting
WordPress powers almost two-thirds of all blogs. It is a free and user-friendly publishing platform. Among its advantages is the rich choice of affordable hosting for your WordPress site. You might face a slight learning curve when you start designing your WordPress blog, but it doesn’t require an extensive technical background.
WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org
It’s important to differentiate between these two. There are some heavy restrictions on using WordPress.com. You can’t choose a custom domain name, it doesn’t let you add plugins, you can’t sell your own ads, and its SEO and analytics are limited. You can only use rudimentary designs because blogging theme support is limited. Finally, you can remove WordPress branding, but you have to pay.
WordPress.org is a far better option. It doesn’t come with any branding and features unlimited plugin options. The design is completely customizable with WordPress themes. You can select a custom domain name, and you will have full control over advertising and other monetization. The only fee you pay is for hosting and if you choose premium themes, which isn’t necessary.
WordPress.org has robust SEO features with tools such as Yoast SEO. The platform will even let you add eCommerce operations.
Themes and plugins
You can opt for a premium theme once you start getting traffic and money begins coming in. When you’re still getting started, the free ones will do. There are hundreds of free themes to choose from. You can choose under Themes > Add New Theme > Popular, and there’s no need to spend too much time on it.
Tools like Yoast SEO are highly recommended. Choose several popular and free plugins and click on “Activate” once you’ve installed them successfully.
Create the main pages
Your blog needs an About page and a Contact page. You can also have a page with your skills and experience so people know why to hire you. The About page should only have some basic personal information about you. List your preferred channels of communication on the Contact page. People should be able to get in touch with you if they want to ask something or work with you.
You should use your blog not only to introduce yourself and tell your story but also to display recent achievements and explain your value proposition to potential customers.
Write your first post
Before you start writing, think about why people should read what you have to say. What makes your post unique? Why do you care about the subject of your blog post? How can you add real value to this particular topic?
Choose a clear niche to answer these questions. To determine your niche, think about the best part of your day, a dream or an interest from your childhood that persists, any hobbies, or something you’re very proud of. Consider your values. You will immediately get an idea of a niche to start writing about.
