In the competitive landscape of thermal protection technology, Thermik Gerätebau has distinguished itself through an unwavering commitment to innovation as the cornerstone of its business strategy. This approach has not only secured the company’s position as the world market leader for thermal protectors and thermistors but has also fostered sustained growth and resilience in the face of industry challenges.

The protection of innovation through patents and industrial property rights provides Thermik with a significant technological edge over its competitors. This is evidenced by the fact that Thermik holds more international patents and property rights in total than all of its competitors combined—a remarkable achievement that underscores the company’s dedication to pioneering advancements in its field.

Innovation has been deeply ingrained in Thermik’s corporate DNA since its inception. Company founder Peter Hofsaess was a visionary and inventor who continuously evolved his initial products. The pivotal moment came in 1973 with the development of the W1000, manufactured for the first time in a 2-disc design that was flatter than competitor products and solved numerous problems associated with other geometries, such as current self-heating in bimetallic switches. This breakthrough innovation launched Thermik’s trajectory to market leadership.

This legacy of innovation has been enthusiastically carried forward by Marcel P. Hofsaess since 1992. Marcel registered his first patent in 1993, and over 1,000 more have followed to date, demonstrating an exceptional commitment to advancing thermal protection technology. The sheer volume of patents secured under his leadership has solidified Thermik’s competitive advantage and ensured its continued relevance in a rapidly evolving market.

The company’s product innovations span numerous variants and special developments in the field of modern thermal protectors. For instance, in 1995, Thermik launched the P1, the first closed hybrid switch for in-winding applications, designed to fulfill special safety requirements. The P1 ensures that an appliance must first be disconnected from the mains before it can be switched back into operation—a feature technically realized with a PTC heating resistor above the bimetallic switching mechanism.

Another significant milestone came just before the turn of the millennium with the development of fully automatic thermal protectors. The M1 became the first of its kind in which all work steps are fully automated. This innovation proved particularly valuable toward the end of the 1990s when various competitors formed an alliance to capture market share from Thermik. By consistently developing technical innovations protected by patents, the German company not only defended its position but managed to increase its sales in response to this competitive challenge.

Beyond innovative products, Thermik’s strategy includes a strong focus on quality assurance. Regular benchmark analyses by neutral scientific laboratories, such as the Fraunhofer Institute, consistently confirm that Thermik products outperform competitors by a substantial margin. These quality comparison tests evaluate products against their self-declared performance limits, revealing that while most competitors fail to reach their claimed specifications, Thermik products consistently deliver on their promises.

A distinctive aspect of Thermik’s innovation strategy is its customized development service. Numerous electrical appliance manufacturers, including industry giants like BOSCH and Kärcher, rely on exclusive products from Thermik created according to specific customer requirements. These bespoke solutions allow clients to gain market advantages over their competitors, either through more powerful thermal protectors or components that are rationalized to the customer’s production processes.

The company’s innovative spirit is complemented by entrepreneurial courage—a willingness to venture into uncharted territory and embrace new opportunities. This was exemplified in 1990 when, shortly before German reunification, Thermik established a branch in the former German Democratic Republic. This bold decision proved prescient, enabling significant growth in the following years despite the uncertainties of the time.

Similarly, during the challenging pandemic years from 2020 onward, Thermik’s forward-looking management approach enabled the company to navigate supply bottlenecks, production stoppages, and material shortages while still generating increased turnover and further differentiating itself from competitors.

Today, Thermik’s innovation-driven strategy continues to yield recognition and success. The company is counted among the top 100 most innovative medium-sized companies in Germany. In 2021, Thermik was recognized as one of the top 10 achievers in the ranking of the 10,000 most important German companies by the association DDW (Die Deutsche Wirtschaft).

Looking ahead, Thermik is already developing the next wave of innovations, particularly for the growing “green energy” market. Wind turbines, solar power systems, and voltage transformers all require safe and efficient thermal protection components with the long service life that Thermik products provide. As Marcel Hofsaess emphasizes, “As a rule, developments have very long product life cycles of over 20 years. This means that Thermik also sets new standards in terms of ecological and economic sustainability.”

By maintaining innovation as the driving force behind its business strategy, Thermik Gerätebau has not only achieved market leadership but has positioned itself to continue shaping the future of thermal protection technology for decades to come. Its commitment to research and development, quality, and customer-specific solutions ensures that Thermik will remain at the forefront of this essential but often overlooked industry that safeguards countless electrical devices worldwide.
