Heartbreak isn’t just an emotional experience—it can have serious physical and psychological effects. In a study of 114 individuals who had been rejected by a partner within the past eight weeks, 40% experienced clinically measurable depression. Alarmingly, 12% of those cases were moderate to severe. And heartbreak doesn’t just weigh on the mind; it can take a toll on the body, too. Research over the past decade has linked intense emotional stress to cardiac abnormalities and even heart failure, confirming what ancient wisdom has long suggested: you really can suffer from a broken heart.
Sean Wheeler, CEO of Pure Hypnosis, knows this pain all too well. Though he didn’t set out to become a hypnotist—or to be known as The Heartbreak Hypnotist®—his own life experiences led him down this path. With a degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Miami, Sean began his career at CNN, confident in a future behind the camera. But when performance anxiety threatened his career and wellbeing, he discovered hypnotherapy, and everything changed.
“I sought out hypnosis because I was nervous speaking in front of a group,” Wheeler has shared. That initial session didn’t just help him overcome stage fright—it sparked a deep personal transformation. He noticed an immediate shift in confidence and outlook on life. Inspired, he pursued certifications and eventually left journalism behind to dedicate his life to guiding clients through recovery.
Heartbreak would ultimately shape his niche. As clients struggling with lost love sought his help, Wheeler noticed that heartbreak wasn’t being taken seriously in the mental health world, despite being a deeply painful and sometimes debilitating experience. He saw an opportunity not just to treat it, but to transform it.
Drawing on clinical hypnotherapy and real-world experience, Sean developed a unique methodology specifically tailored for those suffering romantic loss. “There are predictable emotional patterns people go through during heartbreak,” he explains. “Once you understand that, it becomes possible to break those patterns—and create new ones rooted in healing and self-love.”
Today, Sean Wheeler is known nationally for helping clients move beyond emotional pain into powerful new chapters of their lives. His story reminds us that the path to purpose isn’t always linear—sometimes, the most painful detours become the most meaningful journeys.
From Layoff to Launch
In 2002, Wheeler was laid off from Turner Broadcasting. Rather than seeing this as a setback, he used it as a chance to pivot. He became a certified clinical hypnotherapist and opened his practice in May 2003. Like many new entrepreneurs, his early challenges were not about skills but marketing. While maintaining part-time work at Turner, he built his client base, then leaped into full-time hypnotherapy in 2007—a gamble that soon paid off.
His big break came in 2010 when he appeared on Atlanta’s The Bert Show to help a host quit smoking. It worked, and her public praise triggered a surge of new clients. Within days, Wheeler’s schedule was fully booked.
“It worked, and when she spoke about her experience on air, I instantly had more clients than I could handle,” Wheeler recalls. At one point, he was doing nearly 40 sessions a week while handling all administrative tasks alone. Though exhausting, it confirmed the strong demand for fast, effective therapy.
The Birth of a Brand
In 2012, during another Bert Show appearance, Wheeler mentioned his success helping clients through breakups and jokingly suggested they call him The Heartbreak Hypnotist®. Days later, he returned on air with the new title—and the brand was born.
The public response was overwhelming. Seeing the opportunity, Wheeler rebranded his business around heartbreak recovery. Relationship issues quickly became a dominant area of his practice, not only due to demand but because of his connection to the subject.
“Heartbreak is so universal,” he says. “Almost everyone has experienced it. And for me, it was something I struggled with for many years before discovering hypnosis. Facilitating emotional growth in this way is deeply rewarding.”
How Hypnosis Heals the Heart
Wheeler’s method focuses on breaking the mental loops that keep people emotionally stuck. Whether clients cling to idealized memories or replay painful arguments, hypnosis helps redirect their focus, regain emotional control, and begin letting go.
“It helps in several ways,” Wheeler explains. “The first step is breaking the ‘thought loop’—the endless replay of memories that keeps people hung up on their ex.”
He also emphasizes practical steps, such as blocking an ex on social media, to reinforce the emotional reset. Together, these create space for genuine healing and long-term clarity.
Balancing Purpose and Parenthood
As his business grew, so did his family. Becoming a husband and father introduced new challenges and insights. Wheeler saw how many adult struggles stem from childhood wounds and became more intentional about being present for his daughter.
This required conscious rebalancing of work and life. At times, he scaled back workload and income to prioritize family—a choice he embraces without hesitation.
“I knew I had to prioritize spending a lot of time with my daughter,” he says. “That meant being disciplined about creating work-life harmony.”
Today, with a team supporting operations, Wheeler can focus more on client care and training. His business is scaling, but never at the expense of his values.
A Vision for Hypnosis at Scale
More than two decades into his career, Wheeler is focused on expanding awareness of hypnosis as an effective alternative to traditional talk therapy. He hopes to bring what worked in Atlanta to national and eventually global audiences.
“Hypnosis is still a fringe industry; we need to communicate it in a down-to-earth, relatable way,” he says.
He is also training other hypnotherapists and building a network of practitioners dedicated to rapid, meaningful change. His goal is to spark a movement, not just grow a business.
Advice to Aspiring Practitioners
For those entering the field, Wheeler offers grounded advice: focus on results, communicate clearly, and manage your energy with intention.
“I maintain balance by being conscious of my priorities and intentional about how I spend my time and energy,” he shares.
Through heartbreak, hypnosis, and hard-earned experience, Sean Wheeler has built a life and business centered on helping others reclaim theirs.
