Gold is often thought of in terms of coins, bars, and jewellery. But you can still invest in it without having to buy or store any of these. If you follow the gold price in India, online gold products can provide you with price exposure through market-linked routes. This can prevent charges, purity checks and home storage. Each route has separate fees, separate risks, and separate rules.

Why Purchase Gold Online?
Gold Online is a way to own gold linked assets in digital form. Some routes are exchange-traded, while others are via mutual fund platforms. Check the product type, regulator, cost, ease of sale, exit terms before you start. Read the official scheme or exchange note
Gold Exchange Traded Fund
Gold Exchange Traded Funds or Gold ETFs are mutual fund schemes which follow the domestic prices of gold. They are quoted on the stock exchanges and can be bought and sold like shares. The fund owns gold or gold-linked assets approved by the fund. You own units in electronic form.
In most cases, you need a demat and trading account to buy a Gold ETF. Complete KYC, add funds to the account, select a Gold ETF, see the scheme information and place an order during market hours.
Unit price tracks gold price but fund costs and tracking error may cause a small difference between ETF return and gold price.
Fund of Funds Gold
Gold Fund of Funds is a mutual fund scheme that invests in units of a Gold ETF. This provides investors a way to get gold exposure via a mutual fund route.
You can invest after KYC on a mutual fund platform. Choose the scheme, read the key documents, enter the amount and pay. Some schemes also provide for regular investments through a systematic plan.
This route may not require a Demat account. But investors should check the scheme cost as the fund invests in another fund and this can add another layer of expenses.
Digital Gold Receipts
Electronic Gold Receipts or EGRs are receipts for gold held in an approved vault. They are securities which are negotiable on a recognised stock exchange. According to the NSE, EGRs are backed by physical gold and are held in a demat account.
To buy, open or run a demat and trading account, find out the EGR segment, select the gold unit available and make an order. EGRs can also be used to make physical withdrawals of gold, subject to the process, quantity and fees set out.
An EGR is a part of the SEBI regulated system consisting of exchanges, clearing firms, depositories and vault managers.
Exchange Traded Sovereign Gold Bonds (ETSG)
Sovereign Gold Bonds or SGBs are government securities linked to gold and issued in grams. New tranches are subject to government notices. The latest notified issue series on the RBI SGB portal is 2023-24 and the old bonds are still outstanding.
Some SGB units can be traded on the stock exchanges. If you want to buy there, check the exact series, market price, maturity date, volume of trading and bond terms before placing your order.
The price of an SGB on the exchange may be different from the value of gold. It is important to check both the bond terms and the quoted price.
What about apps for digital gold?
Some apps even sell products called digital gold or e-gold. These are not to be confused with Gold ETFs or EGRs.
In Nov 2025, SEBI said such digital gold products are not securities or regulated commodity derivatives. SEBI said these products are not covered under securities market investor protection rules either.
Before you pay, you should check who regulates the product, how the gold is held, how you can sell it, and what happens if the platform or seller goes bust.
Steps to Invest Online
Step 1: Set your goal. Decide if you want a one-time buy, regular investing, exchange trading or a route that might let you take delivery of gold.
Step 2: Fill in the KYC. Open a trading and demat account if your selected product demands it.
Step 3: Compare costs, tracking, liquidity, holding rules and exit terms.
Step 4: Before you buy, read the official product papers.
Step 5: Place the order through a registered or recognised platform and keep the trade record.
Step 6: Periodically check the holding and review current tax rules before a sale or redemption.
Conclusion
No need for jewellery to invest online in gold. Gold ETFs, gold fund of funds, EGRs and exchange listed SGBs provide different modes of getting exposure to gold. Each one is different in how it works, as well as costs and terms. A good look at the regulation, product documentation, liquidity and exit provisions can help you understand the route before you invest.
