In 1901, the Encyclopedia Britannica was printed in the United States and was infamously sold door-to-door. These hard working salespeople were often the butt of Hollywood jokes - including a famous 1969 Monty Python sketch.
Being a business leader is never easy. As the leader of your company, a possible fall from grace is difficult to recover from, especially if your downfall is triggered by an event in your private life
Considering the amount of prestige your position entails, you will need to guard your reputation from threats both internal and external. One wrong decision could cause damage to your image, especially if the organization you lead has a strong following in the industry.
The best way to get started on reputation management is to secure your life outside your posh office. Here’s a simple guide to give you the basics of personal reputation management.

Watch what you post

With that being said, be mindful of what you share, write, and connect with on social media. Since everything is out in the open, there’s a good chance anything you post will be taken out of context and used against you and the company. It’s easy to blend your professional practice as a CEO with your thoughts on politics and personal music taste. There needs to be a boundary between these two worlds, especially when you’re using your professional social media account to express personal opinions, some of which could be a PR disaster waiting to happen.

Reach out to the public

Negative publicity is anything but good. Now that we’re living in a time where everything we say and do is scrutinized by the public eye, the least you could do is cause people to dislike you and (by the principle of association) your company. For this reason, always aim to build a PR campaign that doesn’t force people to respect you. Instead, your campaign should focus on solving problems and listening to the people working in the field. This humanizes your image and lets people know you’re on their side.

Don’t take accusations sitting down

You will face different forms of sabotage during your time as a CEO. Whether these are instigated by disgruntled supervisors under your wing or lobbed by your business rivals, accusations of wrongdoing could do more than smear your reputation. It can also get other people to doubt your legitimacy.

For this reason, you wouldn’t want to take any type of mudslinging lightly. If you’re accused of being involved in the illegal drug trade, you should know what is the DEA or Drug Enforcement Agency’s mandate in dealing with unsubstantiated drug-related claims. Get your legal team on full alert and draft a communications plan to reduce further damage.

Know who you are dealing with

As a CEO of a large company, you will meet different people with different motivations. Some may have a sincere need to collaborate with your organization, but others could be engaged in intelligence-gathering. That’s not to say you should cast doubt on everyone you meet, but you just have to be careful when networking with people you barely know. The information you may share about your private life as well as your company’s plans could leak through your lips, so you should always stay guarded.

Endnote

As the leader of a company, anything you say or do could cause your downfall. Never let that happen by applying these tips to keep your reputation safe.
