After earning a degree in sociology from Humboldt State University, he took a year to reflect. It was also where he met his wife, whom he proposed to just before taking the bar exam in 1997.

“That was a pivotal year,” he said with a laugh. “I graduated, got engaged, passed the bar, and started my legal career, pretty much all at once.”

Dave Ruzumna did not wait long to plant roots. After a brief stint working for a small firm, he opened his own practice in 2000 and never looked back. “I have spent a lot of time listening,” he said. “Being on the bench teaches you that leadership is not about having the loudest voice. It is about paying attention. It is about stillness and judgment.”

Ruzumna applies that same listening posture in his mentorship of younger attorneys and law clerks. He believes in candid communication, early intervention, and a consistent standard of professionalism. He makes it a point to call opposing counsel at the start of every case.

“There is no harm in being civil,” he said. “You can be firm, fair, and kind all at once. That is how you build trust, with clients, with judges, and even with the person on the other side of the courtroom.”

A Commitment To Community, A Calling To Serve

Beyond his legal work, Ruzumna is deeply involved in the Seattle community. He has donated hundreds of hours of pro bono work to causes ranging from AIDS advocacy to foster youth to animal welfare. Through the Lawyers Fostering Independence program, he provides free legal services to young adults who have aged out of the foster care system.

“These are people who often do not have someone in their corner,” he said. “They deserve to be heard. They deserve good counsel. That is our job.”

He also volunteers with local theater organizations, shelters, and the Phinney Ridge Legal Clinic. The consistent theme: show up, do the work, stay human.
