The Breeders’ Cup is one of the biggest horse racing events in the world. If the Triple Crown event is the college equivalent of football, then the Breeders’ Cup is perhaps the Super Bowl. This year marks the 41st anniversary of the event.

It’s only natural to assume it will probably be the biggest in history. You’re probably quite nervous if this is your first time attending the Breeders’ Cup. However, you don’t need to worry because we’ll be talking about the things you need to know during your first attendance at the Breeder’s Cup.

It’s the Championships!

The Breeders’ Cup is commonly considered an endgame for breeders and trainers. In addition to the purse money, which can go to millions, a win in one of the races can have additional rewards, not to mention bragging rights! Because of the number of horses and trainers participating in this event, some races are meant for horses with different preferences. This event has multiple races based on age, sex, distance, and types of track surfaces, which are dirt or grass.

The Breeders’ Cup World Championships takes place in two days with 14 races in total. The Friday races focus on two-year-old Thoroughbreds. The event will include $1 million Juvenile Fillies Turf, $2 million NetJets Juvenile Fillies, $1 million Juvenile Turf, $1 million Juvenile Turf Sprint, etc.

The Saturday races focus on three-year-olds and above and will include the $7 million Longines Classic, $5 million Longines Turf, $2 million Longines Distaff, $1 million Big Ass Fans Dirt Mile, etc.

So When and Where Is It Happening?

The Breeders’ Cup usually takes place on the first weekend of November; this year, the dates are 1 and 2. It is made this way to let the horses and trainers have the spring, summer, and fall to prepare for the event.  That said, this year’s event will take place in Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. It’s also fun to note that this will be the third time the Breeders’ Cup will be held in this place. The Oceanside track first hosted the event in 2017 and the second in 2021.

So How Do Horses Qualify?

Before you attend the 2024 Breeders’ Cup, it’s important for you, a horse racing enthusiast, to know how horses qualify for the races. You can assume that it can be arduous given that the Breeders’ Cup is the championship of horse racing, which means only the best of the best horses can compete. Horses can qualify in three ways: the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, the Panel of Experts, and the Graded Stakes Point System.

So firstly, the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series is a series of races that takes place throughout the year. The system in this series is a “Win and You’re In.” It’s as simple as it sounds: win a race in this series, and you’re automatically in the Breeders’ Cup at the end of the year.

But how about those that didn’t win? Well,  they can take a spot through the Graded Stakes Point System. Certain races in this series usually give the horses a grade depending on the quality of the competition they entered and the quality of the race itself. However, they must be in the top three in their races to receive points. Of course, the horses with the most points will be given a spot at the Breeders’ Cup.

And lastly, the Panel of Experts. The job of these experts is to ensure that only the best of the best horses qualify. They will select their picks and discuss whether the horse is good enough to participate in the Breeders’ Cup. These are usually meant for horses with qualities that can’t simply be decided by the point system and cannot win one of the races in the series. With all  that said, you can assume that the Breeders Cup odds 2024 to be crazy.

It’s a Social Event

Because of the purse, not to mention the proximity of Del Mar’s location to Holywood, many A-list celebrities will be attending. You don’t want to get caught just wearing your shirt and jeans, right? In other words, you need to dress to impress. For the ladies, you can opt for a comfy but elegant attire. Sure, it’s like a semi-formal event, but you’ll still walk a lot during the races. So we suggest wearing pumps or some stylish flats.

For the gents, it’s probably time to bust out the suit. But hold your horses (pun intended)! No need to go all out. A blazer and a pair of khakis are fine. Pair it with a sharp bowtie, and you’re good to go. Also, you’re battling against the heat of the Californian sun, so don’t forget to bring your sunglasses. This goes for the ladies as well.

Final Words

The Breeders’ Cup is one of the biggest horse racing events in the world, so it’s best to assume that only the best horses and personalities in horse racing can attend. Not just them as many celebrities, athletes, and politicians will also be coming. However, don’t worry too much because, with research, you won’t be caught out of place in such an awesome event.
