As a business owner, empowering your employees is crucial for both their personal development and their productivity.

Employee development refers to the combined efforts of both employees and managers to enhance the skills and knowledge of company staff, fostering career growth and success. Implementing effective strategies that boost employee development can be beneficial, leading to increased productivity, engagement, and higher retention rates for the business. This also helps managers foster a talented pool of skilled and competent workers who can not only drive the organisation forward but also achieve professional milestones for themselves.

Here are some ideas for effective employee development.

Implement mentorship programs

Connecting your employees to knowledgeable professionals and mentorship opportunities is an effective strategy you can leverage to boost their development. As a business owner, you can facilitate this by offering access to your professional contacts and network, and setting up partnerships between employees and mentors to help your staff develop specific skill sets.

For the employee, they benefit from having professional contact with somebody who isn’t just more experienced, but who understands what it’s like to be in their shoes. After all, mentors were once newbies themselves, too. No matter where your employees may be on the corporate ladder, mentorship can help them build the skills and resources to continue levelling up in their careers.

Host Workshops and Training Sessions

Workshops and training sessions are a great resource to help develop staff competencies and boost employee development within their roles at an organisation.

As a business owner, you could offer workshops, seminars or training sessions to help build essential knowledge in areas like technology skills, client etiquette and management or even health and wellbeing. Regardless, integrating adult learning principles that are centred on an educational approach can yield greater value for employees.

Make full use of performance reviews

It’s not unusual for employees to dread performance review season, particularly if they are a relatively new hire and still finding their feet within an organisation. As a new employee, you might feel nervous ahead of an upcoming performance review, especially if you feel you haven’t yet grasped the entire picture of a workplace environment, its culture or expectations.

But performance reviews don’t have to be all doom and gloom. They’re also a great opportunity for managers to delve deeper into the development of their team and identify areas of potential growth. As a manager, you can elevate your performance reviews by transforming them into a learning and goal-setting opportunity with your staff. Using performance reviews as an opportunity to look ahead can help boost motivation for many employees and fuel their professional development.  Managers can also use performance reviews as an opportunity to identify and set out goals to achieve, helping formulate positive growth mindsets for employees.

Encourage cross-functional collaboration

There is nothing wrong with exposing your employees to more experienced experts and professionals in their field. On the contrary, further enhancing one’s professional development often requires an employee to gain insight and awareness into other roles and functionalities in the organisation by partnering with people who perform different roles from them in the business.

This attests to the importance of cross-functional collaboration as an employee development tool. Job rotation programs, where you give an up-and-coming professional the chance to try out another department to broaden their horizons, can be beneficial. As well as this, hosting company-wide knowledge-sharing sessions or seminars can help employees keep an open mind, think outside the box and learn valuable skills they may not have access to otherwise. In 2023, Asana conducted a Work Global Index Survey that featured 10,000 participants across the globe and focused on work collaboration. According to their report,  92% of organisations with cross-functional collaboration felt that their work was a more valuable contribution compared to those that possessed little to no cross-functional collaboration.

When it comes to employee development, managers play an essential role in empowering and equipping their employees, regardless of whether they are newly recruited or long-serving experts. By integrating different strategies to boost employee development, employees can excel and progress toward higher roles, not just to meet an organisation’s goals, but also for their own professional development and career growth.
