In 2023, a Gallup report found that nearly 6 in 10 employees are “quietly quitting,” which is often a result of poor management and lack of engagement. Furthermore, the Center for Creative Leadership reported that 60% of new managers fail in their first two years, which emphasizes the importance of effective leadership training and ongoing support. According to Benji Kushwaha, managing teams effectively is critical to a company’s success, especially as it grows and evolves. When starting, many businesses may only have a handful of employees, but as they scale, it becomes increasingly important to manage people effectively. With over 10 years of experience building and leading teams, he offers three strategies for leaders to guide a company to success through proper team management.
Clear Communication and Open Dialogue
Clear communication ensures that all team members understand the company’s vision and goals. “When we say the company is all about people, it’s not just about the organization but about a group of people working together toward a shared mission,” Benji explains. As a company grows, different departments and skill sets emerge. Therefore, aligning every team with the company’s mission helps ensure they’re not just focused on their roles but on contributing to the overall success. When managing teams, Benji stresses the importance of having a clear and consistent line of communication. He highlights, “Clear communication is key. We need to ensure that everyone is working towards the company’s vision, even if they come from different skill sets or backgrounds.”
In addition to clear communication, encouraging open dialogue with employees is important. When employees feel heard and understood, they are more likely to be engaged and productive. He explains, “You need to listen to your team’s problems, whether it’s about KPIs, workloads, or interpersonal conflicts. By listening, you show them that they’re valued.” A leader’s ability to provide a space where employees can openly share their concerns and ideas helps build trust within the team. Benji points out that being approachable and empathetic is essential for creating a positive work environment. “It’s not just about telling your team what to do; it’s about listening to them and understanding their challenges.”
Right People in the Right Roles
As businesses grow, the dynamics within teams can shift. One of the key aspects of team management is placing people in roles that align with their skills and interests. “Sometimes, you might hire someone for a particular role, but as you get to know them better, you realize their strengths are elsewhere,” Benji explains. This flexibility in roles is crucial for optimizing team performance. Benji shares an example where a team member, initially in an operations role, was struggling to manage the team effectively. After observing their skills, he realized the individual would be better suited to a management position, where they could thrive in a different capacity. “Understanding people’s strengths and giving them the freedom to grow in the role they excel in makes all the difference.”
The Power of Appreciation
For Benji, simple gestures of appreciation can go a long way in motivating teams. “Sometimes, a simple ‘thank you’ or a small gesture of recognition can make all the difference.” Whether it’s publicly acknowledging someone’s achievements or privately thanking them for a job well done, recognition helps employees feel valued and appreciated. “Some people prefer public recognition, while others prefer a more private acknowledgment. As a leader, you need to understand what works best for your team,” Benji advises. He also points out that celebrating milestones, such as birthdays or project completions, can strengthen team bonds and show employees that they are part of a supportive and appreciative environment.
