The crypto industry has surprised us so many times. However, it seems that nothing has stunned the experts as much as the success of the Dogecoin project. It initially started as a memecoin, with the developers creating it for fun. As time passed, the community grew, and the network evolved into a purposeful blockchain with real-world backing. The critical turning point was the interest expressed by Elon Musk and his vision.

Today, DOGE is the leading memecoin project that has an excellent reputation in the digital asset industry. It’s a signal for many investors to check out the Dogecoin calculator and potentially invest to support the coin’s progress. The network already has functional use cases, real contributors on GitHub, and a roadmap that features tech upgrades to come. Speaking of which, we’ll check out the biggest technical updates of Dogecoin so far.

1.    Lowering Transaction Fees for Real Use

It was Elon Musk’s vision that largely inspired DOGE’s long-term value and adoption. One of the crucial propositions was Musk’s assessment that the network has to lower fees to become an acceptable payment method. The idea was to help adopt Dogecoin as a daily payment option for small transactions. He envisioned using DOGE to pay for coffee or a newspaper. However, he argued that the fees couldn’t be more expensive than the item you purchased.

The developers announced a big update in November 2021. It included a 99% reduction in transfer fees, which massively contributed to the coin’s use. From a technical perspective, the creators reduced the relay fee and adjusted the dust limit. Apart from cheaper direct transactions, this also lowered operational costs. As a result, it motivated merchants to adopt DOGE as a payment option. It was in line with Musk’s idea to make Dogecoin available to people for everyday transactions.

2.    Supporting Faster Block Times and Higher Throughput

The next suggestion Musk made was about scalability. His idea was simple – if you make the network more scalable, it can achieve a higher throughput. That means it can handle more transfers each second, allowing faster transaction times.

How did Dogecoin plan to achieve this? The first goal was to increase block size while also decreasing block mining time. At this point, the specification shows that it takes about a minute to mine a single block on the chain. It has a 1MB size, which means the network can process up to 40 transfers per second.

The downsides of speeding up the transactions include centralization risks and security concerns. However, the current rate still isn’t enough for mass adoption. Although the TPS rate is higher than Bitcoin or Ethereum, it’s still behind Solana or some other chains.

3.    Promoting Real-World Utility via Tesla and X

Elon Musk made an effort to include Dogecoin in real-world use cases. The first move he made was to include DOGE as an acceptable form of payment in Tesla stores. Tesla is owned by Musk, and it was in 2022 when it started accepting this coin for some merchandise. The items included apparel, belt buckles, toys, and many others.

The platform had a complete checkout process. That includes integrating wallets, providing support, and ensuring real-time price updates. The idea was to confirm that DOGE is a viable payment form for everyday transactions. It should motivate developers to enhance their APIs and security to accept this method.

Musk even teased that he would include DOGE for payments on Twitter. That hasn’t happened up to this point. However, the inclusion in Tesla stores proves that Musk isn’t only thinking about advertising Dogecoin. He is actually looking for ways to improve its integration.

4.    Encouraging Dogecoin Core Development

If you want to improve a blockchain, it’s only natural to continually work on its core. For many years, Dogecoin’s development has stagnated. Updates were rare, and the core development team focused on other projects. It wasn’t until Elon Musk became interested in DOGE that this development revived.

After Musk discussed the currency in public in 2021, several contributors announced they were coming back to the project. GitHub activity has significantly increased since then, and we’ve seen frequent version updates. Even new contributors appear, and the overall interest of the public has gone up.

The community reestablished the Dogecoin Foundation. The Foundation took the advice and indirect backing of Elon Musk and its close associates seriously. Even Vitalik Buterin, the creator of Ethereum, joined the hype around DOGE. He insisted that the project should migrate to the Proof-of-Stake mechanism.

5.    Upcoming Tech Upgrades in the Dogecoin Roadmap

The future of Dogecoin is exciting because there are so many update proposals aiming to improve the network. A roadmap exists, and here are some crucial mentions from it:

  • Improved synchronization times. The idea is to decrease the time that new nodes need to synchronize with the chain. The enhancements would include more efficient validation of blocks, as well as checkpointing.
  • Multi-signature wallet enhancements. The native support for these wallets will improve, which will help enhance the use of the currency in custody and corporate settings.
  • Node upgrade tools. These should create a more robust infrastructure, suitable for institutional and merchant adoption.
  • Improved wallet SDKs and APIs. The integration into payment gateways, apps, e-commerce, and other platforms should become simpler.

Some stress tests and benchmarking efforts are also taking place regarding improving scalability even more. The idea is to identify potential bottlenecks and ensure that any protocol changes happen effortlessly.

Follow the Upgrades: Trade with Confidence

Dogecoin is far from being only a meme. It now has real-use cases and an actual blockchain with a roadmap that plans multiple technical upgrades. Merchant adoption should expand in the coming years, along with improved scalability that should have a positive influence on DOGE’s value. So, if you are planning to buy Dogecoin, these are all positive signs that now might be the right time to invest.
