Cryptocurrency is a disruptive technology, and this has helped it become a very exciting industry. Considering Bitcoin launched in 2009 to very little fanfare, the industry has achieved a lot in the past 15 years. It now has a $3.2 trillion market capitalization and was touted as one of the most important aspects of the recent U.S. election.
It can be difficult to make any kind of prediction for what is coming next, but certain trends look certain to be prominent in 2025.

The Cryptocurrency Market

Following Trump’s election win, the installation of Elon Musk as head of a newly-formed D.O.G.E. government department, and the recent announcement that Gary Gensler is going to stand down from the SEC in January, cryptocurrency’s imminent future looks very exciting. Investors will continue to put money in Bitcoin while also trying to predict Binance new crypto listings.
New coins launch every month, according to cryptocurrency author Kane Pepi, and speculators hope that by spotting the next big thing, they will be able to generate a 100 times profit or more. This will continue, along with the launch of new and innovative coins.

More Meme Coins

Meme coins have seen some of the biggest price rises this year, with the likes of Pepe and Shiba Inu leading the way. However, the year has also seen the launch of new coins like Pepe Unchained.
Pepe Unchained is reaching the end of its presale period and has gathered more than $40 million in investment. It is a layer 2 meme coin. It has all of the typical attributes of a meme coin, including the garish green frog logo, but it has genuine utility. As a layer 2 network, it adds extra protocols that its developers say will lead to lower costs and quicker transactions.
It aims to become the network of choice for future meme coins and, as a result of this, it recently announced Pepe’s Pump Pad, which will be a launch pad for meme coins. Solana’s network has something similar – Solana’s Pump Fun has seen the launch of a lot of meme coins, and the Pump Pad looks like it will follow suit, especially if early investments are anything to go by.
The continued success of Solana, and the launch of Pepe Unchained, means we are likely to see a lot more meme tokens launch next year.

More ETFs

News during the first few months of 2024 concentrated on the launch of Bitcoin ETFs and the subsequent launch of Ethereum ETFs.
Head of the SEC, Gary Gensler had fought against these financial products ever reaching the market, but a court of appeal judged that his decisions were overstretching his remit, and this led to dozens of products hitting the market.
For Bitcoin, this saw billions of dollars of institutional investment. Ether’s ETF uptake was subdued in comparison, but as soon as ETH ETFs hit the market, analysts turned their attention to which crypto would be next to get the ETF treatment. The consensus is that Solana is the most likely to get its own financial products, although the likes of Ripple and Stellar are also in with a shout.
Gensler has announced that he intends to stand down in January, likely a result of Donald Trump’s election victory and his promise to sack Gensler on day one. This means that Trump will be able to put forward a candidate to take up the position, and it is widely expected that this person will be a crypto-friendly choice which would suggest that more ETF approvals could well be on the cards.

Global Regulations

Gensler has proven unpopular within the crypto industry because he has brought 100s of actions against cryptocurrency companies. He has also resisted the idea of regulating crypto separately, stating that existing regulations are more than capable of coping with the new technology.
Again, a new chair is likely to make different decisions, so the U.S. could see new cryptocurrency regulations. A lot of other countries tend to use the U.S. as a benchmark, which means we can expect other countries to follow suit, too.
Many governments are already discussing the possibility of regulating the industry, and in particular stablecoins, and this is only likely to speed up in 2025.

Governmental Bitcoin Buying Sprees

During his election campaign trail, Donald Trump mooted the idea of using Bitcoin to solve the country’s national debt. He also said he plans to make the U.S. the crypto capital of the planet.
America’s national debt stands at $35 trillion and it isn’t yet clear how Trump expects to clear that using the world’s largest cryptocurrency, but the suggestion strongly points to the use of cryptocurrency as a national strategic imperative, and he did state that under his stewardship, the U.S. would no longer sell off its Bitcoin holdings.
Other countries may follow similar paths, and if countries start buying up millions of Bitcoins, this is only likely to push its price up further and faster.

Ethereum’s Dethroning?

Although it has posted year-to-date gains, Ethereum has struggled when compared to Bitcoin. Most other top coins have enjoyed stronger years than Ethereum.
Despite being the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, it suffers from a lack of recognition. Even Dogecoin is more widely recognized than Ethereum by the general public. What’s more, networks like Solana continue to offer cheaper and faster transactions, which means developers are choosing these other networks over Ethereum.
Unless Vitalik Buterin and his team can find a way to improve the Ethereum network’s performance, it is plausible that Ethereum could soon be overtaken in the race for the top.

Prices

In terms of prices, Bitcoin has already teased the $100,000 mark and looks very likely to breach that psychological level, with many analysts pointing to a likely price of $150,000 or more in 2025.
Ether should reach $4,000 but may need network improvements to push higher. Solana could go on to reach a price of $500, according to some analysts, who also say that Doge has the potential to reach its $1 target that investors have been hoping for for years.
