In 1980, while most eight-year-olds were playing Pac-Man, Rick Cockerham was doing something far more unusual: teaching himself to code. Sitting in his father’s house with a Sinclair ZX80 – a primitive computer boasting just 1KB of memory – Rick opened the manual and began a lifelong journey into the world of artificial intelligence. Decades later, that journey would lead him to build something few individuals ever achieve: his own private AI-powered stock trading system that consistently outperforms the market.

Today, Rick’s proprietary system – affectionately named ANNIE – does something that billion-dollar hedge funds spend entire teams and budgets trying to replicate. And unlike most financial innovations trapped behind institutional walls, Rick is bringing ANNIE directly to independent investors like himself – those who are tired of hype, wary of predictions, and eager for real-world results.

The Personal War With Wall Street

Rick’s inspiration to build ANNIE was born not in a university lab or a venture capital boardroom, but in his own frustration with losing money in the market. “Every time I tried trading the stock market, I lost,” he recalls. “So I finally decided to build the AI stock trader I’d been imagining since college”.

Unlike most AI stock trading systems that attempt to predict where prices will go, Rick pursued a different path entirely. He envisioned an AI that would evolve its trading behavior based on real-world performance – not guesswork. That vision took years of tireless work and countless failures before finally taking shape.

A Decade of Trial, Error, and Epiphany

For nearly ten years, Rick experimented with genetic algorithms – models inspired by evolution that allow systems to “breed” better solutions over time. His first attempt? “It was awful. It didn’t work,” he admits candidly.

But Rick’s martial arts training, which spans seven disciplines over 35 years, taught him the discipline of patient iteration: showing up each day, refining techniques, and constantly improving. Eventually, his breakthrough came in the form of hybridizing genetic algorithms with neural networks – a combination that unlocked the system’s ability to discover patterns and optimize trading behavior.

“It actually found a pattern in the stock market that it could take advantage of,” Rick explains. “And I’ve been honing that ever since”.

From Hedge Fund Dreams to Personal Freedom

In 2018, emboldened by ANNIE’s growing success, Rick partnered with an investor to launch a hedge fund. The timing, however, was disastrous. As the COVID-19 pandemic hit in early 2020, market volatility spooked his investor and derailed the fund entirely.

That failure, rather than being an end, became a turning point. “After regrouping, I started using the AI myself – and that changed everything”.

Using ANNIE to manage his personal investments, Rick quietly achieved financial independence. He walked away from his full-time job and leaned fully into perfecting ANNIE, free from the constraints of institutional investors, venture capital pressure, or the whims of Wall Street.

The System That Evolves, Not Predicts

Unlike conventional AI trading models that forecast future prices, ANNIE approaches stock trading more like an expert trader than a fortune teller.

“She doesn’t try to predict the market,” Rick explains. “She evolves – using real-world results to select what works and discard what doesn’t”. Every day, ANNIE analyzes over 1,200 stocks and delivers daily trade recommendations based purely on what works in the moment, not on speculative forecasts.

For users, the system is refreshingly simple: one email or text message each day with buy, sell, or hold recommendations. Investors remain fully in control, executing trades manually while ANNIE handles the complex analysis behind the scenes.

The Engineer Turned Entrepreneur

After securing his own financial freedom, Rick faced a choice: keep ANNIE private or open it up to others. Driven by a desire to help independent investors compete against Wall Street’s undercover algorithms, Rick chose the latter.

“My customers are independent investors – engineers, professionals, retirees – who are serious about managing their own money but don’t have the time or resources to build their own AI tools,” Rick says.

At just $20 per month, ANNIE offers a level of access that’s nearly unheard of in an industry often reserved for the wealthy elite. And because users execute their own trades, there’s no need for complex licensing or handing over control of their accounts.

Looking Ahead: Bigger Ambitions, Same Core Values

While ANNIE’s current version delivers daily stock picks, Rick’s ambitions stretch beyond stock trading. He’s already experimenting with next-generation models that may contribute to the broader evolution of AI, including advancements toward artificial general intelligence (AGI).

“What excites me most is that some of the techniques I plan to experiment with could be steps on the path toward AGI,” he says, revealing that ANNIE’s self-evolving architecture may one day inspire breakthroughs well beyond financial markets.

The Quiet Disruptor Who Showed Up Every Day

In a tech world crowded with billion-dollar startups and overhyped AI promises, Rick’s story offers something refreshingly rare: patient craftsmanship. No venture capital. No big marketing machine. Just a man, a computer, and decades of daily practice.

“I didn’t build ANNIE overnight,” Rick reflects. “Like martial arts, it was years of trial, error, and patient iteration. Success didn’t come from talent – it came from showing up every day and pushing a little further than I had the day before”.

In doing so, Rick Cockerham has quietly built not just an AI stock trader, but a tool that may help independent investors reclaim a piece of Wall Street’s advantage – one trade at a time.
