When starting up a construction business, one of the most essential parts is to ensure you have enough stock compared to the demand of your clients, as if you can’t fulfil their orders, you’ll lose business! To ensure you have enough stock, you’ll need to have enough space and storage to hold all your stock and needs to be both spacious but also safe and secure to prevent damage.

There are so many different types of storages you can go for when starting up a company, with the standard big warehouse being an option. However, for most start-ups, affording a big storage facility like this simply isn’t an option and would rather use those funds to go towards business costs and stock.

One option companies use, is to use old shipping containers to house stock, and then use a shipping container roof kit to essentially double the storage size available. However, these are just one option available, let’s take a look at some other options new businesses will have.

Depending on what your business is, will depend on what type of warehouse and storage you need. For some, a simple open space will be sufficient, however for others, much more advanced and sophisticated storage facilities will be required.

Your business could be selling timber or certain metals, meaning the cover and what storage you may need.

Shipping containers

Using old shipping containers is a great and cheaper alternative to renting out a massive warehouse. Providing you have the space to hold them, they can be a great way to save some cash whilst also keeping your stock safe and secure. There are plenty of options too, with you being able to either buy the shipping containers outright or renting them, depending on your budget.

If you’ve gone down this route and now find yourself looking for more space, you could then look into a roof kit for your containers. These allow you to essentially join together two containers with a roof, allowing you to then store supplies in between the containers, vastly increasing the holding space for items and goods without needing to increase the overall space you have available.

Standard warehouse

If you’ve got some more upfront funds available, you may be able to rent out a warehouse to use. These vary in sizes depending on the scale of your company are the most common type of storage facility used by companies. Alternatively, for businesses just starting out or looking to save on initial setup costs, considering an ideal small warehouse space in a strategic location could be the perfect solution. These spaces can provide just the right balance of affordability and accessibility you need. This type of arrangement is particularly useful if you’re looking to expand your operations later without committing to a large facility upfront. Efficient in allowing transport in and out with big open entrances, along with being completely weather resistant, these offer both great protection but also great convenience in your business.

Depending on what your business does, you may have a shop front connected to the warehouse to allow customers to order what they need and be able to collect in one transaction. If your website if more focused to a wider audience, then you may be able to get a warehouse a little bit further out meaning it could save you some money.

Automated warehouses

Linking into the above, these are just normal warehouses that have been adapted to support automated machinery to allow for smoother processing and allow the business to work more efficiently.

With all these different types of warehouses comes risk and safety measures that need to be taken into consideration. Such things as large vehicles being in and around the warehouse transporting and delivering goods, large heavy automated machinery being in operation sometimes 24 hours a day, they need to be kept up to date and services to ensure they’re safe to be around.

Depending on where your business is and how long you’ve been trading, will depend on which warehouse you need and which one you go for. It’s key to ensure you’re fully aware of your business’s needs and requirements before making the decision and choosing which warehouse is right for you going forward!
