With recent innovations in omnichannel marketing, voice assistants, ChatGPT, and self-driving vehicles, society is speeding toward an artificial intelligence-driven future. While many see the potential for AI to usher in a new age of human advancement, others are concerned that a dependence on it may lead to a loss of basic skills, creativity, and even human intuition. Artificial intelligence is an undoubtedly polarizing topic, but a deeper understanding of its capabilities and potential limitations is crucial in unlocking its full potential in developing technologies.

As a seasoned technology executive with a focus on product innovation and software engineering, Chikara Labs founder Amritansh Raghav has a unique understanding of AI and both the positive and negative impacts it can have on society. Working with industry giants such as Google, Microsoft, and Fuze, Raghav has seen the widespread implications of artificial intelligence on the human experience. With AI transforming everything from education to personal development and communication, will it augment our future or leave us yearning for the past?

AI and the Future of Education

The effects of AI in the classroom have been evaluated by a variety of educational organizations, including the U.S. Department of Education and UNESCO. AI has an array of applications in the field that can enhance learning outcomes, but may also pose risks and ethical concerns.

For neurodiverse learners and students with disabilities such as hearing and speech impairments, AI software can assist in the personalized administration of lessons and coursework by providing multiple modes of interaction, such as text-to-speech and speech-to-text. This can ensure that students have equal access to learning and the ability to access content, ask questions, and communicate with peers.

While artificial intelligence is no replacement for teachers and educational leaders, as it becomes more advanced, it can also take on the role of a tutor or teaching assistant, creating lesson plans and guiding students through classwork and homework. AI can adapt work to focus on a student’s strengths and weaknesses and improve their learning outcomes.

Artificial intelligence clearly has the potential to enhance educational experiences, but an overreliance on AI can lead to issues like a loss of basic skills. While many assume that the automation of basic tasks is beneficial, the use of AI minimizes human participation in tasks, reducing our cognition and leaving the decision-making up to the algorithm.

Not only does this result in the loss of basic skills over time, but it also raises ethical concerns, as AI’s output is often based on dominant (and not necessarily true) viewpoints and may relay biased or even false information.

Transforming Communication with AI

Since its advent, AI has been used to facilitate communication through speech and writing. Tools like Duolingo and Google Translate make communication accessible worldwide and are commonly used to connect different cultures and diminish language barriers.

As it advances, AI is expected to take on the role of a communication coach, analyzing the content and patterns of speech and providing feedback on how to improve speaking and tailor it to specific audiences.

With an increasing amount of mundane tasks automated by AI, people will be able to spend more time communicating. An example of this is transcription tools, which can be used to forgo note taking during meetings and lectures and have been shown to enable active listening and boost productivity.

As AI continues to revolutionize how we communicate, many see artificial intelligence as the ultimate communicator — but can it emulate the personal touches of the art of conversation? Relying on AI to aid communication can lead to a lack of nuance in conversation, as AI can’t replicate the human empathy and emotional intelligence required for profound interactions.

When asked about AI’s purpose, Amritansh Raghav mused, “I think technology is not meant to replace people; it is meant to take away all the busy work that we have so we can do the things that uniquely make us human, right? Whether it is building trust, building relationships, building empathy, building closeness.”

Personal Development Through the AI Lens

As a universal pocket-size personal assistant, AI can do wonders for one’s self-improvement. AI-based tools can streamline various aspects of personal development, from building habits to developing workout routines, managing stress, and learning new languages.

With the help of AI, we’re entering a new frontier of self-improvement where everyone has a life coach. As AI develops, it can account for one’s data, such as habits, past decisions, and preferences, in order to assist in formulating informed decisions about life goals or career choices.

The use of AI can aid in tangible personal development, but at what cost? An overreliance on AI for self-improvement can result in a lack of human interaction that trainers and coaches are known to provide. There’s also the real concern that relying on AI for personal development can lead to oversharing personal data, which runs the risk of a data breach.

AI Can Replace the Mundane

Amritansh Raghav believes that artificial intelligence can be used to enhance human potential, but is most effective when balanced with people’s skills.

AI should be used for tedious day-to-day tasks but can’t replace the ingenuity, emotion, and adaptability of the human spirit. “Me filling in a form capturing meeting notes, sending a status report, this is not the best use of a human being’s time,” Raghav said in a recent interview. “And I think this is the sort of thing that software is supposed to do. It was just that until the advances of AI and machine learning, technology could not understand what was conversed or what was seen.”

AI has the potential to improve our efficiency, granting us more time to take on creative and fulfilling tasks that require humans’ more advanced skill sets. As we move toward a future inevitably driven by AI, it is important to embrace technological innovation and consider artificial intelligence as complementary to the human experience, not adversarial.

Perhaps Amritansh Raghav put it best when he said, commenting on an idea from Ben Evans, “You can think of AI as having a thousand interns, right?”
